Steelers' Stewart expresses interest in Dolphins
The Dolphins will hear from Kordell Stewart once he becomes a free agent.
Pittsburgh has promised to release the quarterback by Feb. 28, when free agency opens, and Stewart's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said his client would like to see what Miami has to offer.
Coach Dave Wannstedt repeatedly has said during the off-season that Jay Fiedler will be the starter in 2003. However, the Dolphins would like to upgrade the backup spot held by Ray Lucas and Sage Rosenfels.
"(Stewart) wants to start, but it's unclear where there will be a starting spot," Steinberg said. "No one is simply going to give Kordell a starting spot, but I think the best thing to do is find a competitive situation.... But Kordell is attracted to Miami."
Because Stewart is under contract the Dolphins are not allowed to comment publicly, but if they are interested they could receive competition from teams such as Baltimore, Arizona, Chicago and Carolina, which are looking for a No. 1 quarterback. Arizona could lose Jake Plummer unless it puts the transition or franchise tag on him.
