Despite rumors to the contrary, the Browns had not shopped quarterback Tim Couch prior to this week. That doesn’t mean they won’t, although it would have made sense to dangle him this month before the start of free agency when his trade value might have been at a premium. Tyrone Wheatley - RB, Oakland Raiders Feb. 14, 12:45 p.m.
Wheatley perhaps is the most high profiled of the Raiders' free agents. Whether he re-signs with Oakland likely is more up to him than the Raiders because the Raiders want him back. The main issue is, does Wheatley want more money and a shot at a starting spot on another team or less money, the familiarity of Oakland's offense and playing for a legitimate Super Bowl contender? The Raiders wouldn't mind re-signing Wheatley because his powerful style serves as a nice complement to Garner's cutting, slashing style, and he knows their offense already.
Fantasy Spin: Look for Wheatley to entertain offers from other teams for a while once free agency begins and see if a too-good-to-refuse offer materializes. (Steve Corkran/TSN)

"Byron Leftwich has huge, Daunte Culpepper-like size at 6-foot-5½, 240 pounds. He also has a great arm. Ty Detmer - QB, Detroit Lions Feb. 15, 2:42 p.m.
Detmer, the No. 3 quarterback, will likely stay with the Lions. Detmer arrived in Detroit two years ago in a highly controversial trade with the Browns, which cost the Lions a fourth-round pick. Former head coach Marty Mornhinweg took a lot of heat for that move, but Mariucci has defended it, saying that Detmer brings great intangibles, leadership and chemistry to a team. (Tom Kowalski/TSN)

Peppi Zellner - DE, Dallas Cowboys Feb. 15, 9:11 a.m.
Zellner was arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. He was arrested Thursday by narcotics investigators from the Monroe County Sheriff's office and the Forsyth Police Department. Zellner was released from the county jail Friday on $5,000 bond. He is an unrestricted free agent, but the Cowboys have shown little interest in re-signing him.

Mike Rumph - CB, San Francisco 49ers Feb. 15, 7:51 a.m.
Rumph was acquitted of drunken driving Friday following a four-day trial. He had faced a maximum sentence of six months in jail.

Bill Williamson, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings TE Jim Kleinsasser’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, plans to send a contract proposal to the Vikings next week. The two sides have been talking for some time and the Vikings appear likely to put their transition tag on the unrestricted free agent to limit his availability when free agency opens.

The San Jose Mercury News reports former 49ers RBs coach Tom Rathman has signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Lions. Rathman said he wanted to stay with the 49ers but they told him they were going a different direction.

Associated Press reports the Buffalo Bills are letting WR Peerless Price decide his future with the team. Team president Tom Donahoe said if Price’s main objective in free agency is money, then he’s better off hitting the open market. However, Donahoe said the team is hopeful he’s looking at the big picture and everything the offense has to offer. Both sides have expressed an interest in remaining together. Price’s agent, Tim McGee, said he’s not optimistic of that happening at this time but he’s not ruling it out.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Cleveland Browns have not decided what to do about restricted free agent RB Jamel White, but it appears as if he’s not in the team’s long-term plans. They could opt to tender him at the lowest offer (around $563,000 last season), but that would most likely spell the end of his tenure in Cleveland since he wasn’t drafted and therefore wouldn’t require any draft compensation if he should sign with another team. They could also opt to tender him at the highest offer ($1.227 million last year), but then he would have a high cap number and would probably be released at a later date.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs have a difficult decision to make with QB Trent Green. Green is set to earn a roster bonus of $8 million on March 2, and combined with a $2 million salary, he is set to count $10 million against the team’s salary cap in 2003. Team president Carl Peterson said the team could afford to keep Green on at that cap number without renegotiating, but then that would limit what they could do in free agency. The team would prefer to restructure Green’s contract, but they could also decide to go a different direction and just outright release him. “You know, it could come down to a situation where we say, ‘Look, if you feel you cannot help us and help this football team then maybe we just need to go in a different direction,” Peterson said.
